Apple brought an expensive speaker to a commodity assistant war. That was pretty much the narrative around HomePod in 2018. It nailed the computational audio model and AirPlay 2, when that part finally arrived, but a lot of people were too busy throwing cheap, ok-enough sounding, but super smart Amazon or Google boxes into damn near every room in their house to notice.

But now Apple has John Giannandrea, Google’s former head of Machine Intelligence and Search, on their executive team, and things could finally — huge emphasis on the could and finally — be getting much better for Siri.

What could all that mean for HomePod 2? And what about HomePod mini, HomeBar, and HomePad?

I bought it yesterday and to be honest it sounds okay. The single channel limited it and I don’t think the smart reflection did much to make it sound more than one single speaker. Any decent stereos would be a whole lot better, maybe it’s just me, I find two channels to be very crucial. And I can only enjoy it when I sit right in the middle of the two speakers.

I would never take home pod over a Sonos system. Apple missed the bus on smart speakers.

I sold mine for one single reason, volume is just GOOD ENOUGH... for most songs is a bit too low for movies is a joke.

Bought mine for a great speaker and it was only one to use Apple Music iTunes. I didn’t get it for an assistant.

I purchased for the incredible audio. Didn’t even consider using Siri for assistance. Unbelievably AWFUL. HomePod is also very convenient when used as speaker phone. Callers could not detect the speaker phone mode and claimed the quality was excellent. I use Echo Dot 2nd generation for typical inquiries such as weather, sports scores, an occasional spell check and control command for lighting. The quality of the voice is excellent . I also purchased Echo Dot 3, which has too much bass to he point I cannot understand the answer to questions. I adjusted the equalizer which did not improve the quality.

Rene you missed the entire point of why google home minis and echo dots are selling. its not the sound quality, its a quick, cheap (high quality product for its price) and very smart assistant. siri on homepod cant even do basic things that the google home mini or alexa can do.

I hardly doubt two HomePods could replace a Playbar, a bass module and two Play:3's. In fact, I've never doubted anything harder in my life. Sounds like someone got bought.

3:51, I’m betting you had an Onkyo from 2014 to 2016, those had loads of HDMI board issues. Which affected more than the HDCP handshake. You didn’t fall for Hollywood bs (even though HDCP is a PITA).

Should go for a Denon or Marantz next time. Sound bars are inferior, convenient, but still inferior in audio quality.

Also look into buying your AVR from a store like Nebraska Furniture Mart, or Best Buy, or from a local audio shop. They should offer a cheap extended warranty. I have a 3 year extended warranty on my AVR. It’s just a 7.1 set but, I’ll be using in the living room instead of the den by the time that runs out. Plus I know of a handful of audio shops where I live that get in parts for AVRs with fried HDMI boards that will fix them for you.

They really just need to make a cheaper version, the cost is insane. No one cares if it sounds marginally better than others. People want a cheap smart speaker for every room in the house like Echo Dots.

I think Samsung adopting airplay2 will vastly improve the limitations of the HomePod. I can’t wait to have my tv playing through two of them.

The reason I love Apple after all these years is because they always put out great products and they keep making them better with updates....no one is ever correct with there thoughts on “what Apple should do” ....never.

HomePod is the worst of both worlds. For people who care about music quality and wants the better voice assistant, Amazon Echo is better when hooked up to a stereo system. For people who are more casual and simple, then again Amazon Echo is the better choice. Alexa is better than Siri, and Echo can use all sorts of music streaming services.

It’s funny how all the Apple tech channels release videos talking about Apple products on the exact same day. First it was “IPhone XR one month later” and now it’s “let’s talk about HomePod months later.” It’s not much of a coincidence... wouldn’t this be considered a commercial in a way?

One of the biggest flaws of siri right now is how fragmented it is, so yeah i agree apple should work on making siri as homogeneous as possible. I dont use siri on the mac, but i do use siri on my iphone for creating alarms and reminders etc.

I have Itunes installed on my apple phone and my pc, my HomePod is situated next to my pc, I can airplay iTunes from my pc to just my HomePod or to both it and my Amplifier in the living room. We have Alexa in the kitchen and upstairs, Alexa as we all know is way smarter than Siri, but what Siri can do it does so flawlessly. Importantly and as highlighted in this video Siri is just software that can be updated and improved, that's the reason why I invested in one.

                                                              • ahale1987

I'm definitely in the Apple ecosystem (Mac, ATVs, Watches, iPhones, iPad, growing iTunes library, and Homekit) and I'm mostly happy (I'd love to run retro console emulators on my ATV 4K without going through the fresh hell that is side-loading, but that's a different discussion). I want to like the Homepod but there's a couple things keeping me from pulling the trigger on the HomePod. First, I already have an AW and/or iPhone on my person 98% of the time and so does my wife, so summoning Siri isn't an issue. Second, I'm not an Apple music subscriber and that seems to be the HomePod's bread & butter. Third, I don't like that anyone within earshot of the device can read back texts, email messages, etc. Fourth, as good as the audio is on the HomePod, I'd have much more use for a wireless speaker for casual listening: not a $350 speaker. For critical listening, I've already got my Sennheiser HD 380 Pro headphones. If they made a mini version, lower the price, and fix the anyone-can-read-my-stuff issue, I'd buy a several for Homekit control alone.

I get jealous when I see how nice the Echo Show and Spot work along with the Google Home screened devices. I'd love to see Apple make something to compete with that instead of telling us to go buy an iPod Touch or an iPad mini and call it a day. I get why that won't happen, but a nerd can dream.

It is enough of a tv experience upgrade that I happy with it, even though the AppleTV-Homepod connection breaks if I try to do anything fancy like airplay. Hopefully this will be fixed, eventually. The connection is easily re-stablished with a swipe down on the Apple tv remote, so it is just irritating, not a showstopper.

If you haven't heard two homepods in stereo, one on each side of a TV, you shouldn't call it stupid. The sound is almost uncomfortably hi fidelity. "Wait, is there someone in the house?" Sure, I could have gone 5.1 home theatre and maybe ended up with better surround sound, but it wouldn't have been cheaper, it would have been painful to install, would taken up a lot of space and provided unsightly cables and a lot of shit to trip over.

90% of our TV time is Netflix on Apple TV and the other 10% is iTunes on Apple TV. I wanted better sound. I bought home 2 homepods, plopped them on the table on either side of the TV. Poked at my phone for a bit, and I had even better sound than I hoped for. I am very happy. But it would be even nicer if I could airplay to the Apple TV without being uncertain whether the homepods were going to play the sound or the tv would.

If you bought two Homepods to get stereo sound and use AirPlay for your Apple TV that is one thing, but that means you paid $700 USD or $900 CAD, and now you are into home theater systems which allow a number of devices to into them. Including not only your TV, but Apple TV, game console and more. So buying two Homepods is really stupid, and limiting only AirPlay devices to connect to those HomePods. If you only own Apple and nothing else, then I guess your good to go.

A theater system supports surround sound and allows way more devices to connect to it, including not only your TV, but game consoles, cable box, Apple TV, or other devices. The HomePods only allow AirPlay. So if you wanted a better stereo system with surround sound, then a home theater system is much better, and it's roughly the same price as two HomePods. But I guess you knew that Duh! Some people would say you got ripped off. Duh!

I bought two for how great the sound is not to have the speakers act as my assistant, or do other things using third party apps.
