I can buy a mechanical keyboard for 10 bucks. They are not necessarily more expensive.

I've been using an IBM model M keyboard for years, and I've gotten used to the feel of the bucking spring switches. After finding two of the 'space saver' (TKL) model M's I realized that I did not need the full size 102-105 key type and I've been quite happy with the TKL M. However, it is a bit larger than most of the compact mech's that have become popular. It is also missing the "Windows" key, and while I use Linux, that key is often mapped as a "super" key in Emacs macros, or common keyboard short cuts. While you can remap the key elsewhere, I've started to give some consideration towards one of the compact mech's.

I don't think I want to go as minimal as a 61 key layout, though I use the 'F' function keys so little that I could live with the "fn+top row" combos for them. OTHO, I do want the cursor cluster, along with the other 'direction' functions, so I guess we're talking a 71-74 key layout. As for which switches, I'd want something that emulates the bucking springs, so I guess that's cherry green or white (tactile-clicky) though I can live with the quiet tactile types as well in the medium to high force variants (which emulate the bucking spring feel).

I can do without the fancy RGB light shows, but a subtle white back light on the keys, perhaps with active lights on caps lock and num lock (though I don't think I ever use the embedded num pad on the TKL M some software maps to this) would be nice. I don't need keyboard macros, at least not IN the keyboard. I can create macros in Emacs after all. I also don't need fancy key caps. White with black lettering, or visa versa would be fine, and gray on the non alpha-numeric keys (like my Model M has) will do.

Not sure where to look for the above, I'd like not to have to spend much more than what a new Unicomp goes for. Either DIY kit or factory built is OK, I know how to solder. Ideas for a newcomer?

I've both a normal Logitech K480 keyboard and a mechanical Cherry MX Red one.
I've to say, I enjoy typing on the cherry keyboard A LOT more than the Logitech one, maybe because the logitech keys are round in shape lol.
But, the logitech one is easy to carry around and it's bluetooth enabled.
So, when I'm home, or am going to type for a long time, it's mechanical. When I'm out, or just lolling about in the house, Logitech one it is.

I have a mechanical keyboard for gaming and while im at the desk and a decent midline /lower gaming pc.. but ive also got one of those touchpad/chicklette combo keyboards for laying in bed...

I love my IBM Model M's. I have several full size, and several of the "compact" version, which was available only with server systems, I believe. I have two Compact Model M's still in unopened boxes. Thinking of selling them. Glad to see many new motherboards still have a PS/2 connector. Love my clicky clacky Model M's.

Tough, heavy keyboard with mechanical keys that if the key goes "click" it took the keypress, and if it didn't go "click" it didn't take. None of this having to look at the screen to see if one of your keystrokes didn't take. Plus, some of the new membrane ones have a nasty function of if you don't let up on the previous key fast enough, it'll ignore your next keypress. The old XT ones you could have any number of keys down and it would STILL take the next press.

I have a K800 luminated logitech keyboard, it works fine and i like the feel of laptop keycaps, BUT one day i wanted to clean it, especially between the keys, dust accumulated way too much in there and while trying to remove the keycaps, many of them broke easily... Not only the keycaps but also sometimes the scissors plastic mechanism, it was just overall very fragile and i think you are never supposed to take them in first place, so enjoy the dirtiness.
After that i tried to search for keycaps and their mechanism replacement, let's just save the cost after all, you can only find it in ebay and they cost way too much for what is it, the fact that we are talking about a proprietary keycaps and switches really don't help, some of the keycaps and their switches were just not available at all, that's when i realized it was a big mistake to buy a keyboard that you have very little options to repair, unlike mechanical keyboard once something is broken you can only cry.

Now i learned my lesson and i decided to never go back to this kind of situation, mechanical keyboard for the rest of my life it is.

But never leave their saddles, regardless of how long they need to walk in the desert. Saddles are interfaces that are deeply adapted to our bodies whereas horses are consumable items. It should not be forgotten that computers are consumables nowadays, but keyboards are interfaces that we can use through our lives.]
