Watch a show called locked up abroad and you will never ever even try to smuggle drugs. People don't realize in a lot of countries you literally are risking your freedom or as seen here your life.

As much as I feel he's remorseful, I think of the people who take drugs and get addicted then die from them. Its the likes of these men that create that.

Indonesia is one of the most corrupt nations on earth. The people in power today were responsible for mass killings. Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary "The Act of Killing" is a must watch.

Actually looks pretty nice for a prison... You think about asian prisons as something insane, you know, Thai prisons in movies look so scary. Here, it's not that bad. Was interesting to watch. I guess because of balinese laid-back attitude, culture, there are no fights and nobody's trying to run away?

+Jason Snitch Sentences in Canada are pretty light for drug dealing. I have many childhood friends who've either went to prison for selling drugs(all were themselves drug addicts, most people who sell drugs do it so support their on habit). One of my childhood buddies just got an 8 year sentence for 7ounces of fentanyl and carrying a gun, plus he had prior charges. I imagine you'd get at least 20 years in this country. People who are low-level drug dealers can be out in as little as a year or less in Canada. I had another childhood friend become a significant coke dealer, he was caught with a little under a kilo, guns, boxes of ammo, etc. I think he ended up serving under 4 years.

When they said that that guy got over 4 years for .3 of meth I couldn't believe it. You might just have a cop take it from you here in Canada, at most, you'd get a rehab program if you weren't already on probation.

To go one step further, Switzerland really has things figured out Imo, at least for opioid addicts. They prescribe them pharmaceutical grade heroin that they take in front of nurses at a clinic in the morning, are given a pill for midday while they are at work or school, and at the end of the day, they go back to the clinic to get another dose of heroin. This has been incredibly successful. Most of the reason you will get into trouble as an addict is because you are always chasing the money to get the drugs which are incredibly overpriced. If you take away the need o get money all day everyday, people are able toget some semblance of normality back in their lives, people are able to get back on track and use their money the way they should. Then, once you have them in that clinical setting, there is hope of tapering them off the heroin slowly. Much better than methadone Imo, I hope Canada will follow suit. Someone told me in BC they have the same program. It's ideal.

It’s ironic that they got a life sentence because Bali doesn’t want its people doing drugs, but they were actually taking the drugs from Bali to Australia.

Theoretically, they were taking drugs off the streets of Bali because if those drugs wouldn’t have been smuggled into Australia, they would’ve been sold on the streets of Bali.

Indonesia has a pretty strict regulation about drugs, even in the smallest amount can brought you years of imprisonment.. they broke rules, got life sentence.. not ironic.. Bali 9 drugs trafficking is not moving goods to Australia but a lot of drug dealer in Indonesia got their products from them too..

Does that mean we should allow it because you’re from a different country? Absolutely not. We are all human beings and all have a responsibility to speak out against injustice - be it in your home country or not.

                                                        Not for heroin it isn't.
Everybody knows that heroin destroys lives, that of the addicts their families and their victims. Anybody that wishes to exploit their fellow humans in that manner has no empathy and does not deserve a place in society.

It seems to me that the "Bali 9" were given life sentences because they had a lot of publicity. Like the authorities were making an example of them. Either way, a life sentence for nonviolent drug offenses is too much.
